Windsurfing: Selecting a Rope Size

  • 5/32" is used in multiple purchase outhaul or downhaul systems. This size works especially well around small sheaves.
  • 3/16" is an all-around size for standard outhauls and downhauls.
  • 1/4" makes excellent oversized outhauls or downhauls, harness hook-up lines, and holds well in worn cleats.
  • 5/16" and 3/8" are good heavy duty hook-up lines when extra stiffness and a longer usable life are desired.
